Doing the deeper work

So, this week’s SOAR scholarship exercise is one about photography and Me Ra Koh named it: Doing the deeper work. The assignment is to create two self-portraits, one with you in it and the other an object symbolizing you. The real challenge is to have it reflect you, right now. Go read about this more on the SOAR blog.

I am so accustomed to mostly considering Future Me or analysing Past Me (or Past Me‘s mistakes more like) that the idea of simply connecting with Present Me is rather startling in some ways. That’s not to say that I don’t make an effort to be present, because I do… but that’s usually easiest when being with someone I love, and not really in direct relation to myself. Does that make sense?

Anyway. Before I confuse the issue even more than I might have already… here are my two self-portraits:

I totally agree with Karima’s perspective on the first image. I love her analysis. I also notice that there is a baby image on the screen…possibly..HRG? If it is maybe that is because he is ALWAYS a part of everything you do? I also see tired, maybe a bit overwhelmed with the things you need to do that requires electronics to be a part of?

As for the leave, it is alone. Solitude, yet it is against an amazingly bright blue sky. Indicating hopefulness maybe or even that you carry a bright outlook no matter what obstacles you are facing.

I haven’t read your reasons yet. I now need to go look.

Greet job completing the exercise. I am still trying to figure out what I want to do.

Did you? Explain why you posted them? I didn’t see that.

The first one I see someone hiding, and the electronics are too much. Hiding behind gadgets? Gadgets seem to be as much in the portrait as you are.

The second one looks like a branch with hardly any leaves left, and there’s just one clinging on for dear life. Metaphor?

You explain it rather. My explanations seem odd.

You CAN participate in the exercises. You don’t have to be a photographer. And you can join http://www.SOARORITY.com too… the forum is open to all women.

For some reason, when I posted this I deliberately didn’t want to explain. I just wanted you to look and then tell me what you saw. I’ll explain why I chose them in tomorrow’s post. 😀

Just read the post by Me Ra. Very inspiring. I wouldn’t mind doing it myself, but I’m not a photographer, or part of this soarority.
So tell me more here about what this exercise was like for you.

What do you see in the leaf (?) that’s reflecting you right now?

Leave some love or just let me know what's on your mind!!
